Cold drip coffee

Cold drip coffee is the process of steeping coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period of time. Cold drip coffee is different from iced coffee, which refers to coffee that is brewed hot and then chilled by adding ice.

To make cold drip coffee, you need a cold drip coffee maker, the maker would allow cold water dripping into a coffee grounds container. The cold water will then pass through the coffee grounds in a slow speed. This way the flavour of the coffee is extracted slowly in low temperature. The advantages of cold drip coffee are simple to do, low acidity, less caffeine per cup and less bitter in taste.

The cold drip coffee maker available on the market is around A$300 each.

Actually, it can be done with some materials available from the kitchen like this one (total cost less than A$20). It produces the same quality of cold drip coffee.

To do this, you will need:
1. a water container made from plastic soft drink bottle
2. a stand that can hold the water container
3. a small tap to control the dripping speed
4. a coffee grounds holder with filter
5. a glass to collect the coffee concentrate

Procedure:
A. Ratio of coffee grind and water is 1:10.
B. Place paper filter into coffee grounds holder and add coffee grounds.
C. Wet the coffee grounds by adding a little water into the holder.
D. Add water to the container, adjust the dropping speed in 40 drops/min.
E. When water is cleared from the container (will take couple of hours).
F. Keep the cold drip coffee in the fridge and serve when desire.

The final product is a cold coffee concentrate that can be served right away or diluted with ice, water or milk. It can also be reheated and served hot. This coffee concentrate will last for a week.
